Google’s New Keyword Planner
If you’ve used Google to do keyword research in the past few months, you may have noticed a few changes. In an effort to increase search engine relevancy, Google has eliminated their Keyword Tool and replaced it with the Keyword Planner. Change, at first, can be difficult, but the Keyword Planner can help you both select excellent keywords for ads and build effective ad content—both of which will help your online marketing. Here is what the new Keyword Planner does and how it works.
What the Keyword Planner does and how it works
The new Keyword Planner allows you to search for keywords and ad group ideas, get search volume for a list of keywords, get traffic estimates for a list of keywords, and multiply keyword lists to get new ideas.
Search for new keyword and ad group ideas
In order to search for keyword and ad group ideas, you can simply enter a list of keywords, your product or service, your landing page or product category, and then press submit. Google will then return a list of relevant keywords and ad group ideas. For example, if I own a plumbing company and want to advertise on Google, I can enter “plumbing” into the search box, press submit, and Google will suggest the following types of keywords: plumbing companies, plumbing contractors, plumbing supply, plumbing repair, etc. Since these keywords are a bit generic and the data for the whole United States might not be relevant to a small paid search campaign, Google will also let you get data within a targeted area. All you have to do is select your targeted area, and Google will return data within the location you have selected.
One awesome new function of the Keyword Planner is it allows you to add keywords and ad groups to your “Plan” with the click of a button. Your new keywords will be gathered together in the sidebar as you do your research. Once you’re done there, you can click “get estimates and review plan” and pick a specific bid for keywords.
Get traffic estimates
The new keyword tool allows you to get traffic estimates for specific keywords. When you enter your plan information, Google will return a graph with CPC bids, daily performance information, and more. This information will help you correctly update your target settings and ad groups. This information is very similar to the previous Traffic Estimator tool.
Multiply keyword lists to get new keyword ideas
You can use the new Keyword Planner to combine 2 or more keyword lists to generate new keywords. This is a great way to get additional relevant keyword ideas that you may not have thought of yet.
The new keyword tool is pretty intuitive and a great resource for paid search campaigns. If you have any additional questions about keyword research for either paid search or search optimization, contact us at David and Goliath Agency today!
